The museum, inaugurated in 1985, lodges part of the collection of Zapoteca stelae found in Monte Alban. The development of culture in Monte Alban, for  more than 13 centuries, their complex writing system, the calendar and other aspects of Zapoteca culture, are described in the museum. On Stelae 12 and 13 the calendar system can be appreciated. The stelae located in the central area relate the capture of four important characters and their presentation to the ruler. The development of cities like Mitla, Yagul and Zaachila is also described. The ritual earthenware is remarkable.
